In a significant political development, Greenland's Democrats are poised to unveil a four-party coalition government this Friday, as reported by local media. This announcement follows an election period marked by growing interest from U.S. President Donald Trump in acquiring the island.
The anticipated coalition comes as U.S. Vice President JD Vance prepares to visit the Arctic territory, considered semi-autonomous under Danish sovereignty. Vance's visit to Pituffik, a U.S. military base in northern Greenland, aligns with Friday's coalition revelation.
Initially, Vance's itinerary, which included his wife Usha and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz attending a dog-sled race, caused diplomatic ripples due to the lack of Greenlandic invitations. However, adjustments have been made to his travel plans.
According to Greenlandic broadcaster KNR, the coalition's announcement is slated for around 1100 local time (1300 GMT) on Friday, though it cited no direct sources. An anonymous insider confirmed the news to RNG247, highlighting the pivotal role of Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the Democrats' leader, who has spearheaded efforts to create a unified front against President Trump's territorial ambitions.
Nielsen, leading a party that surged to 10 seats in the recent March 11 election, advocates for setting aside political disputes to showcase Greenlandic unity. The coalition, reportedly encompassing 23 out of 31 parliamentary seats, reflects a broad political spectrum, notably excluding the pro-independence Naleraq party, which now holds eight seats.
Though Nielsen has publicly acknowledged the coalition deal per Sermitsiaq, his party abstained from commenting via phone or email inquiries.
Since assuming office, President Trump has underscored the strategic importance of Greenland to U.S. security, an assertion largely dismissed by the Greenlandic populace. Meanwhile, Greenland's acting Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has affirmed the island's sovereignty, stressing that its future lies in the hands of its people.
